The 2018 Crown Group Australian Badminton Open Wolrld Tour Super 300 officially got underway at the Quaycentre Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, with some exciting matches taking place.
Day 1 – Qualification
Initially, World Junior boys champions from 2017, 2016 and 2013 found themselves starting in the qualifications draw but owing to late withdrawals Heo Kwang Hee was automatically promoted into Wednesday’s first round.
2016 World Junior Sun Feixiang of China cleared both qualification hurdles to book an appointment with 2012 French Superseries champion Liew Daren who is seeded eighth.
The least experienced and current World Junior, Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, started off on a positive note by taking the first game against Riichi Takeshita but the Japanese turned things around, 16-21, 21-17, 21-14.
Round 1 – XD
Two top ten players averted early exits.
With a healthy dose of coaching, Indonesia’s Debby Susanto in an alternative pairing with normally men’s doubles specialist Ricky Karanda Suwardi managed to overcome Cao Tong Wei / Ou Xuanyi 13-21, 21-14, 21-11.
For a second time in two weeks world #6 Kim Ha Na in her alternative pairing with Choi Solgyu encountered Annisa Saufika / Ronald Ronald, and it was beginning to look like one way traffic again in favour of the Indonesians who were 2016 New Zealand Open champions.
The last match of the day proved to be a thriller as Kim grew in confidence while Saufika began feeling the pressure. The Koreans prevailed 16-21, 21-17, 21-18.
